On this trail there are numerous aspen groves, flower filled meadows and scenic mountain range overlooks. Government Trail is difficult due to rocky terrain, stream crossing sections and steep climbs.
Government Trail is a difficult singletrack that travels from Snowmass to Buttermilk (or the reverse). Government trail is often compared to its Western continuation, West Government Trail that both offer a long technical ride. Obstacles exist throughout the ride, making it difficult for the average rider. Switchbacks, root ledges and rocks make this trail a legendary ride. A portion of this trail is closed seasonally but will reopen on June 27.
This trail can be accessed by various points on Snowmass ski area. If you would like to ride the entire Government Trail, the start is accessed from the Ditch Trail parking lot with access to the West Government Trail. The recommended connection is from Tom Blake trailhead with a steep ascent up Anaerobic Nightmare or Powerline.
